Scripture: “If you return, then I will restore you. Before Me, you will stand; and if you extract the precious from the worthless, you will become my spokesman” —Jeremiah 15:19 NASB.

I found this wonderful scripture after a weekend of emotional and spiritual darkness. How it spoke to me! An incorrigible list-maker, I quickly made two headings in my journal—“Precious” and “Worthless.”

Under “Precious,” it was easy to list God’s Word and its impact upon my heart; His presence and guidance in my life; the freedom from guilt of past sins; my incredible Christian community; and my wonderful relationship with my daughter, Crystal.

“Worthless” brought a sense of shame, for I have wasted much time playing video games, watching the news, and reading novels. All are time-killers and escapes from responsibility. Each one isolates me from others. None give me the rest and refreshment God wants for me. Not a single one gives His abundant life.

Only by making a concerted effort to avoid our easy escape-routes can we find the joy and peace God promises. Only by setting aside time-wasting nonsense can our lives bless others.

Prayer: Father, forgive us for the precious time we waste. Only Your still, small voice speaking to our hearts brings true refreshment when we are exhausted. Please help us extract Your precious goals from that which is worthless. Amen.
