Scripture: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might (Ephesians 6:10 NKJV).

In AD 325, the Council of Nicaea was convened by Emperor Constantine to debate the nature of the Holy Trinity. Arius, one of the priests, argued that Jesus the Son was not equal to God the Father.

St. Nicholas, then Bishop of Myra, could not bear his faith attacked, and he slapped Arius across the face. It was unbelievable that he would lose control and be so hotheaded in such a solemn assembly. He was stripped of his special garments, chained, and thrown into jail. There, he prayed for forgiveness, though he did not waver in his belief. During the night, he dreamed Jesus appeared and gave him the Book of the Gospels and the garment of a bishop.

When the jailer came in the morning, he found the chains loose on the floor and Nicholas dressed in bishop’s robes, quietly reading the scriptures. Nicholas was then fully reinstated to his position.

The council agreed with his views, and today many Christians repeat the Nicene Creed weekly as their spiritual foundation:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth . . .

“I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God . . . consubstantial with the Father . . .

“I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified . . .”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, let is never waver from Your truth. Let us always stand strong for You. Amen.
