Scripture: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst (1 Timothy 1:15 NIV).
Of all the people He could have chosen, why me? From my earliest childhood, I was overly energetic and disobedient–the despair of my poor mother. We lived in a small, safe Kansas town where children were allowed to play outside without supervision. My wandering feet knew no boundaries, however, and she often had to search for me when suppertime came.
One afternoon I heard lively music from a church down the street and walked into the midst of a revival in my dirty play clothes. I remember standing on a pew, clapping my hands, with a nice lady’s arm about me. My embarrassed mama finally found me and took me home, scolding and spanking all the way.
Although too busy to attend herself, she decided I might benefit from some religious training. Each week thereafter, she brushed my hair, dressed me in clean garments, and sent me to a more “respectable” Sunday School (one with more sedate music and no hand-clapping). I loved the Bible stories and the sweet teacher, and so began my Christian journey that has lasted a lifetime.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord Jesus, that one day You reached down to a difficult, lonely child and drew me to Yourself. Thank you for the kindness of strangers who accepted me and showed me Your love.
